An hour-long mountain flight is an excellent way to experience the closest view of the world’s highest mountains. If you can't trek or climb, the mountain flight is the only way to see the Himalayas. During the flight, you will see Mt. Everest, Mt. Kanchanjunga, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Makalu, and Mt. Cho Oyu, which are above 8000 m tall, and the rest of the endlessly extending Himalaya range. Every day in the morning, when the weather is clear, mountain flights operate. The trek could be an amazing experience in your life if you love mountains. The package for the mountain flight tour is designed for people who have just a few days to explore Nepal, and it can be customized depending on the span of your holiday by adding or cutting off the attractions. This tour has become very popular among people who have either a free day in Kathmandu or just a few hours to spare.

One of the best ways to experience the Nepal Himalaya mountain flight is, of course, to take a glance at the world's highest peak, Mt. Everest, which is just 20 miles away from your window seat after a few minutes of flying from Kathmandu. While some may perceive mountain flights as risky, experienced pilots with a high success rate ensure their safety. Helicopter tours are a more expensive way to see the Himalayas, but they allow you to get closer to the peaks and glaciers. Usually, the helicopter sightseeing tour is planned for 3–4 hours, and you can stop for a cup of tea or breakfast in the Himalayas and observe these stunning peaks and enjoy them as ordinary trekkers do. Prepare yourself with warm clothes, sunglasses, and a camera before going to the airport for the mountain flight.

Apart from the mountain flight and helicopter tour to Everest Base Camp, you can also explore the Nepal Himalaya by paragliding, domestic flights, and ultralight flights (ultralight trikes) from Pokhara, which are very popular among travelers who love to see the mountains from the air.

Best time for a Mountain Flight in Nepal

Spring, autumn, and winter are considered the best times for the mountain flight. Even in the best seasons, mountain weather can change quickly, so expect flight delays or cancellations. If you are already in Kathmandu, you can try taking this flight anytime to not miss a fantastic chance to catch the mountain view. July is the month of giant rains in Nepal, so apart from that, at any time of the year, people can plan this trip.

What Makes Mountain Flight Special?

How Difficult is Mountain Flight?

The Mountain Flight is easy and comfortable, making it suitable for people of all ages. You don't have to walk, hike, or do anything else physical; just take a scenic flight that lasts about an hour. It's perfect for people who want to see the beauty of the Himalayas without having to deal with high altitudes or long days of walking.

Permits Required

You don't need any special permits to go on the Mountain Flight. But travelers need to have a valid passport or ID to check in with the airline. Nepal Excursion takes care of your flight tickets, transfers to and from the airport, and ensures a smooth boarding process.

Safety and Precautions

The most important thing is always safety. All flights are run by well-known airlines with well-kept planes and pilots who have been trained to fly at high altitudes. Flights are planned for the early morning when the skies are clearest.

If the weather is bad or visibility is low, flights are delayed or moved to a later time for your safety. Passengers are advised to follow the crew’s instructions at all times and keep seat belts fastened during the flight.

Training and Preparation

There is no need for any prior training or physical preparation. Before you leave early in the morning, it's best to get some sleep and eat a light breakfast. If you want to take pictures of the beautiful views, make sure you bring a camera with extra batteries or a phone with enough charge.

Mountain Views

The flight gives you breathtaking views of the Himalayan peaks that you can't get anywhere else. These include Mount Everest (8,848 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Makalu (8,463 m), Cho Oyu (8,201 m), Shishapangma (8,013 m), Langtang Lirung (7,227 m), Gauri Shankar (7,134 m), and many more. You can see an unbroken line of snow-covered peaks across Nepal's northern horizon on a clear day, an experience unmatched anywhere else in the world.

Altitude Sickness and Prevention

Since the Mountain Flight is a short, non-landing aerial tour, there is no risk of altitude sickness. Even though the plane flies close to the mountains, the cabin pressure stays the same as it would on a normal flight.

What to Expect During Mountain Flight

Expect an early-morning transfer from your hotel to the domestic terminal of Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. The flight usually takes 50 to 60 minutes and goes along the Himalayan range.

Each passenger has a window seat, and the crew provides commentary and identifies major peaks during the flight. After you land, you'll get a certificate to remember your trip to Everest. Then you can go back to your hotel for breakfast and some time to relax.

Highlights of Mountain Flight in Nepal

Why Choose Mountain Flight

The Mountain Flight is one of the best and easiest ways to get a close-up view of the Himalayas. It's great for people who don't have much time or can't hike to higher altitudes. You can see the most famous peaks on Earth from the comfort of your seat in just an hour. It's a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that gives you the same thrill as climbing Mount Everest without having to do any work.

Packing List, Gears, and Equipment

For the Mountain Flight, minimal packing is needed. Suggested items include:

How to book a Mountain Flight ticket in Kathmandu

Nepal Excursion Treks has a straightforward and convenient process for booking and cancelling the mountain flight ticket. We will issue your tickets and arrange your airport transfers once we have your passport info and fees. If inclement weather cancels the flight, we will promptly deduct the transportation fee and provide a complete refund. A few domestic airlines operate daily flights from Kathmandu airport. The mountain flights are operated in the morning because in the afternoon, there is a high possibility of clouds covering the mountains, and sometimes, strong winds can be a big challenge for the aircraft. If you are thinking of making an online booking directly through airlines, then you may book online through Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines, or Shree Airlines.
However, booking such tickets through a trekking agency in Nepal is much better and more convenient because, in case of cancellation or rebooking for the next day, you have to go yourself to the airline office for all these procedures, and it's time-consuming. You must also arrange your airport transport, so we recommend booking with a registered and trusted trekking company like our Nepal Excursion that is flexible with changes.
