Manaslu trek is one of the rural area treks of Nepal offering you a panoramic view of the mountains, landscapes and an insight into Buddhist culture. Mt. Manaslu (8156 m) is the world's eighth highest summit. Manaslu Trek is located in the restricted area of Nepal and it was opened for trekkers in 1991. The trek is less crowded than the Annapurna and Everest Region. It was not so popular a few years ago but now due to construction of roads in Annapurna region it is getting more and more popular among the trekkers. The trip to Manaslu Trek starts after six or seven hours of a drive from Kathmandu. Even this short drive offers you a stunning view of the mountains and a beautiful view of landscapes and valleys. During the trip you can see the closest view of Mt. Manaslu and many other peaks and mountain ranges.
The route is challenging and the Larkya La Pass (5100 m) makes it more of an adventure. Some parts of this trek also continue through the Annapurna Region so trekkers must have a trekking permit of the Manaslu Conservation Area, Restricted Area and the Annapurna Conservation Area. A few days before you end this trek, if you want to go through the Annapurna Circuit Trek, you can continue from Dharapani and you can experience another adventure trip through Throngla Pass (5416 m) and see an amazing view of the Annapurna and some parts of the Upper Mustang. A massive earthquake of 25 April 2015 has severely destroyed this region, though the Nepal government and the services of the Manaslu Conservation Area have already reconstructed the trail and the basic teahouses for trekkers.

Best Season for Manaslu Circuit Trek

The best times to trek Manaslu Circuit are in the spring (March to May) and autumn as well as a little winter (October to December). These times of year usually have stable weather, clear views of the mountains, and nice daytime temperatures.

The monsoon season (June to August) brings heavy rain, possible landslides, and closed trails. Winter (Jan to February) is cold and might have snow at high passes.

What Makes Manaslu Circuit Trek Special?

How Difficult is the Manaslu Circuit Trek?

The trek is considered moderate to challenging. You won't need to do any technical climbing, but you'll be trekking for many days in remote areas, often for 6 to 8 hours a day, with steep climbs and descents and crossing Larkya La Pass (about 5,100 m). You need to be fit and able to hike in all kinds of weather, and you need to be willing to walk on rough, high-altitude ground.

Permits Required

Because the Manaslu Circuit lies in a restricted area, you’ll need special trekking permits. These typically include:

Also:

You’ll need valid ID, photos, passport/visa status, and Nepal Excursion will apply for these permits on your behalf.

Safety and Precautions

Because the trail passes through high altitude and remote locations, safety is very important. Some precautions include:

Training and Preparation

To prepare for a 16-day Manaslu Circuit Trek, it’s best to start training 4–8 weeks ahead:

Also plan to pack and test your gear ahead of time — boots, layers, rainwear, etc.

Mountain Views

One of the best things about this route is the amazing views of the Himalayas you'll see along the way. You'll see snow-capped peaks around the Manaslu massif, rivers fed by glaciers, and wide valley views from high passes like Larkya La and remote alpine areas. When the weather is nice, you can see the peaks of Manaslu, Himlung Himal, and Annapurna in the distance after you go down past Larkya La and the Budhi Gandaki Gorge that was carved by rough terrain.

Internet and Mobile Phone Network in Manaslu Trek

Most of the places, even at the teahouse you can have a wifi facility in Manaslu trek. Once you are at Dharmasala and this is the most basic place during the entire Manaslu Circuit Trek so you may not expect internet and mobile phone networks on this day. If you would like to have the local sime card for using your own internet and calls then it is better to have a NTC sim card as it has wider coverage. Only a few places like Shamdo, Dharamshala and until you reach Phedi, crossing the larkyala Pass (5106 metres). Rest of the trip you will really have good coverage with net work during this trip.

Altitude Sickness and Prevention

Because you will cross high altitude (Larkya La often above 5,000 m), altitude sickness is a real risk. To minimize it:

These practices help reduce risk and help you enjoy the trek more comfortably.

What to Expect During Manaslu Circuit Trek

You can expect to travel through remote river valleys, high-altitude villages with Tibetan influences, and a variety of landscapes, including lower subtropical and forested areas, mid-hills with rhododendron and oak forests, alpine meadows, moraine-style trails near the pass, and finally down to the Annapurna-area side.

You stay in teahouses (simple lodges) at night, eat local food, and in some remote areas, phone and Internet service may be slow or not available at all. The weather can change quickly. The trek is a mix of adventure, beautiful views, culture, and a challenge. There aren't many people around, so it feels like you're alone.

This trek is suitable for trekkers who:

The Manaslu Circuit Trek may be the best choice for you if you can walk 6 to 8 hours most days, are willing to get used to the altitude, and want to see Nepal in a way that isn't on the main trails.

Tea house Accommodation and Meals during Manaslu Trek

At the lower altitude a standard tea house accommodation is available in Manaslu trek and meals are basic but sufficient for trekkers which is served by the teahouses. You can find the private room for one or two person up to Shamdo and from Bhimthang to all entire trip but at Dharmasala there are only few teahouses so you may prepared to shared the accommodation with other trekkers. Teahouses in Dharmasala are really very basic and a group of 4-8 trekkers have to share the room during the peak season time.
Compared to other places on this day at Dharmashala you may prepare with limited meals served by the teahouse. At the lower altitude than Dharmasala and from Bhimthang you have few choices on meals which you can choose freely from the menu card and place your order.

Plan Your Manaslu Circuit Trek Today

Your 16-day itinerary can start with a drive (or drive + flight) to the trailhead (e.g. start around Arughat / Machha Khola area) and then follow a circuit around Manaslu, including side trips, crossing Larkya La, and then descending to join the Annapurna edge (e.g. Dharapani), with return transport arranged by Nepal Excursion. We take care of everything, from getting you there to getting you permits, meals, a place to stay, and a guide or porter.

There are a lot of ups and downs on the path, as well as suspension bridge crossings and stone steps carved into the cliffs. We'll pass through Tatopani, a village famous for its natural hot springs, where you can take a short break before moving on.

The path then slowly rises toward Jagat, a village with beautiful stone-paved streets that marks the official entrance to the Manaslu Conservation Area. The traditional houses and mani walls in Jagat are the first real examples of Himalayan culture and architecture.

Max Altitude: 1410 m Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerMode of Travel: FootDuration: 7-8 hrs

The trail today continues through a mix of subtropical forest, rocky ridges, and small farming settlements as we follow the Budhi Gandaki River upstream. We will pass through the villages of Sirdibas and Philim, where we can see prayer flags flying and traditional Gurung and Ghale buildings. The path gets narrower and leads to a dramatic gorge with waterfalls and cliffs rising steeply on both sides.

We cross a few suspension bridges and go past Ekle Bhattibefore continuing on to Dyang, a quiet village surrounded by terraced fields and rhododendron forests. As we go higher, the landscape changes and the temperature gets cooler.

Today's hike takes us deeper into the beautiful Manaslu Valley, where the scenery starts to change from subtropical to alpine. The trail goes through thick rhododendron and pine forests, which is a nice change from the rocky paths of the past.

We will cross several suspension bridges and pass through small towns like Bihiand Rana. There, you might see villagers doing traditional farming and yak herding. As we walk along the trail, you can see mani walls, chortens, and prayer wheels, which show how Tibetan Buddhist culture has had an impact.

Max Altitude: 2160 m Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerMode of Travel: FootDuration: 5-6 hrs

Today’s trek is a long but rewarding journey from Ghap to Syala, gaining significant altitude as you move closer to the high Himalayas. The trail follows the Budhi Gandaki River and winds through beautiful forests of fir, rhododendron, and oak. You might see colorful Himalayan birds or playful langurs. The landscape slowly opens up, showing snow-covered peaks and larger valleys.

You'll pass through the pretty village of Namrung, which is known for its Tibetan-style homes, prayer walls, and monasteries. From here, you can see the mountains in all their glory. Manaslu (8,163 m), Himal Chuli (7,893 m), and Ganesh Himal (7,422 m) are the most prominent. Continuing upward, the air becomes cooler and crisper as you reach Syala, a beautiful village surrounded by towering peaks and open meadows.

This is one of the most beautiful places to spend the night on the trek. It's quiet and has breathtaking views of the Himalayas at sunset.

Max Altitude: 3500 m Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerMode of Travel: FootDuration: 7-8 hrs

On Day 8, the trek takes us from Syala to Samagaun, which is one of the most beautiful villages in the Manaslu region. We will pass the holy Pungen Gompa at 4,000 meters. The day starts with a slow climb through forests and terraced fields, giving you amazing views of Manaslu (8,163 m), Ngadi Chuli (7,871 m), and other peaks in the area. A short detour will take us to Pungen Gompa, a peaceful Buddhist monastery that sits high above the trail.

This is a spiritual high point of the trek that gives you a look into Tibetan-Buddhist culture, prayer rituals, and the life of a monk. After spending time at the gompa, we keep going down to Samagaun, a traditional village with stone houses, mani walls, and a peaceful Himalayan atmosphere. Samagaun is a great place to get used to the altitude because you can explore the village and the area around it and see amazing sunsets over Manaslu.

Max Altitude: 3530 m Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerMode of Travel: FootDuration: 6-7 hrs

Today is all about getting used to the higher altitudes while exploring the beautiful area around Samagaun. You can take a short, easy hike to Birendra Lake, a peaceful alpine lake near the village that has amazing views of Manaslu, Ngadi Chuli, and other peaks in the Himalayas.

There is an optional full-day hike to Manaslu Base Camp (4,800 m) for those who want to do something more adventurous. This difficult hike brings you closer to the base of the eighth-highest peak in the world. Along the way, you'll see stunning mountain views, glaciers, and feel a sense of accomplishment. You will see yak pastures, moraine fields, and traditional villages along the way, which will give you a taste of the area's natural and cultural wealth.

This day helps you get used to the higher altitude, which lowers your risk of getting sick from it in the days to come. It also gives you amazing views of the Himalayas and chances to take pictures.

Max Altitude: 4800 m Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerMode of Travel: Foot

On Day 10, we start the day with a moderate 2–3 hour hike from Samagaun to Samdo, a pretty village at the base of the Manaslu massif. The trail isn't very long, so your body can get used to the altitude slowly while you take in the beautiful scenery along the way.

You will see the unique Tamang and Gurung culture of the area as we walk through glacial moraines, yak pastures, and traditional Tibetan-style houses. Samdo is a beautiful village with great views of the nearby peaks, such as Manaslu and Ngadi Chuli. It is also the last permanent settlement before the trek gets more difficult at high altitudes.

This easy day of hiking helps your body get used to being at higher altitudes, which will help you cross Larkya La Pass. The village is also a great place to take pictures and relax because you can see the Himalayas at sunset from there.

Max Altitude: 3690 m Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerMode of Travel: FootDuration: 2-3 hrs

On Day 11, we walk from Samdo to Dharma La (Dharamsala), which takes about 5 to 6 hours. This part goes up slowly through high-altitude terrain, past rocky trails, moraine fields, and alpine meadows, with stunning views of the Manaslu range.

Dharma La is a high-altitude rest stop before the Larkya La Pass, which gives you time to get used to the altitude. The village has simple tea houses where we can get warm meals and sleep in comfortable rooms. You might see Himalayan fauna, like Himalayan blue sheep and different kinds of birds, along the trail.

The trek provides stunning views of Manaslu, Ngadi Chuli, and other nearby peaks. Clear skies are great for taking pictures at sunrise and sunset. This day combines both trekking challenge and scenic reward, preparing you for the most demanding part of the circuit.

Max Altitude: 4470 m Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerMode of Travel: FootDuration: 5-6 hrs

Today is one of the most challenging and rewarding days of the trek as we cross the Larkya La Pass, the highest point of the Manaslu Circuit Trek at 5,100 meters. . The day starts with a steady, steep climb from the last campsite. We'll go through rocky slopes, snow patches, and glacial moraine terrain.

Reaching the summit offers breathtaking panoramic views of Himalayan giants including Manaslu (8,163 m), Himlung Himal, and Cheo Himal, creating a truly unforgettable moment. After taking time to celebrate the achievement and capture photos, the trail descends toward Bhimthang (3,720 m), crossing high alpine meadows, small streams, and yak pastures along the way. Bhimthang is a small, remote village with cozy lodges and a quiet atmosphere where we can relax and recover after crossing the difficult pass.

Max Altitude: 5100 m Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, DinnerMode of Travel: FootDuration: 8-9 hrs

After a challenging day at Larkya La Pass, today’s trek is a gradual descent through the scenic Manaslu region. We'll walk through terraced fields, meadows at high altitudes, and traditional villages, and you'll see the scenery change from alpine to mid-hill forests. The trail has stone steps, suspension bridges, and streams that you have to cross, which makes for a fun and varied hike.

Along the way, we might encounter local shepherds, yaks, and glimpses of traditional Gurung and Tibetan-influenced settlements, offering a cultural insight into the region. At the end of the day, we reach Tilche (2,300 m), a lovely village with simple lodges where we can relax, eat hot meals, and talk to other trekkers.
